From the banks and bridges of the mighty Waikato River, watch the action and excitement unfold as the top ski teams from New Zealand and Australia reach wild speeds of over 100kph in hot pursuit of the prestigious champion water-ski racing title.

The event kicks off on Friday night with ‘Show & Shine’ in the vibrant Hood St Precinct where the public will have the opportunity to see an impressive showcase of some of the hottest ski race boats in the country.

Seven different events will take place over the weekend, with the premier event – the Long Ski Race – held on Sunday afternoon. The gruelling race comprises of two legs over 82km, starting in Cambridge, winding through Hamilton to Taupiri and finishing at the Bridge St Bridge in Hamilton’s CBD. The current record for the race is an impressive time of 33 minutes and 31 seconds set by ‘Top Gun’ in 2004.

The powerboats will sprint their way up the river while the two skiers pulled by each boat must use all their skill and stamina to cut through the currents, stay on the single ski and avoid a watery plunge.
One of the best vantage points for watching the action is at the Grantham St boat ramp where the pits, commentators and entertainment are based. The riverside walks and bridges also make for great vantage points.

The Poker Run is the last race of the weekend and is one with a unique and fun twist where anyone can participate in any type of boat. Participants cruise the river, collecting cards along the way and the winner isn’t the first boat home but the team with the best poker hand!

Other events throughout the weekend include novice, junior, master and family classes, full-throttle time-trials without the skiers on the back, powerboat sprints and jetski, thundercat and wakeboard races and there is also a number of great prizes up for grabs
